Many people, including
many psychologists, believe
that explanation of a mental
event consists exclusively of
the discovery of how the brain
works in generating such an
event. I think that this is a
mistaken belief. It is true that
many secrets about the
workings of the visual nervous
system have been uncovered
that clarify some facts about
perception. We now know, for
example, how patterns of light
reflected from objects in the
world trigger neural discharges
of the cells on the retina, and
how these neural "signals" are
transmitted through various
relay stations to the visual
cortex and on to other regions
